At the crux of Interstate 80 and Highway 49, Auburn serves as a crossroads of the foothills Gold Rush history and the hustle bustle of business and industry the corridors provide locally and regionally. Auburn (Population: 14,011) is also the county seat of Placer County, where most government business is conducted. The Auburn State Recreation Area draws visitors from near and far for its challenging single-track trails that offer access to the beauty of the American River canyon, whether enjoyed on a hike, a bike or on horseback. Old Town Auburn, with the preservation efforts of its historic architecture on full display, offers visitors a mix of restaurants, shops, pubs and wine-tasting. Auburn is about a 20-minute drive to Grass Valley, 45 minutes west to Sacramento, and 90 minutes east to the Tahoe/Truckee area.
