Just “down the hill” to the west of Grass Valley and Nevada City, Penn Valley offers a peaceful and pastoral backdrop to life in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. From farms, ranches to vineyards, Penn Valley remains a key cog in Nevada County’s agriculture, business and tourism industries. Nature lovers enjoy area trails, whether on bikes, hikes or horseback, as well as the nearby South Yuba River State Park and Lake Englebright. In the heart of Penn Valley is the 87-acre Western Gateway Park, boasting bocce and pickleball courts, a disc golf course, a brand new bike park, covered and open picnic areas and a 3,500 sq. foot stage pavilion used for concerts and other gatherings. Annual events, like the Penn Valley Rodeo, the Daffodil Run and Living History days at Bridgeport often draw visitors to make their first, but certainly not last, trip to this bustling town of about 1,500 residents.
