How Lake Wildwood began

  • In the late 1960s and early 19070s, a manufacturer of wood products and distributor of construction materials, bought a large creekside lot in Penn Valley from the rancher Ed Colwell. The company built a planned community and dammed the waterways, creating a freshwater reservoir.

  • The dam, completed in 1969, turned this naturally occurring creek system into the large, private lake that now defines the community. Wildwood Creek, Deer Creek, and other tributaries flowed through the area prior to the dam’s construction.

  • Today, the community of Lake Wildwood has a land area of roughly 2,800 acres, populated by around 5,000 residents occupying more than 2,000 houses.
