VIDEO: Nevada County Community Forum discussion focused on changes coming to your trash can

An audience of approximately 50 people attending last week’s Nevada County Community Forum at Sierra College asked questions on the changes coming in 2024 regarding trash collection in Nevada County and throughout California.

The importance of sorting trash, the timelines that are part of Senate Bill 1383, and locations where landfill, green waste, recycling, and organic waste will go in the future were among the topics discussed.

Californians are going to have to be retrained in the recycling game, according to David Garcia, Nevada County Solid Waste Program Manager.

For example, a pizza box with a piece of cheese stuck to the bottom will soon be sorted into organic waste bins.

“A lot of states don’t recycle,” Garcia said. “I’m programmed to recycle… because I’ve been trained to do that. Food waste is going to be very similar… It’s going to be a paradigm shift.”
